Mustard is a delicious condiment for barbequed foods and can even be used in dips and sauces–perfect for when you are entertaining guests. But it is also messy and can easily stain your carpet. How can you get mustard stains out of your carpet, especially when you do not have the time to run out to the store to get a special product? Here are Continental Carpet’s methods for doing just that. Before you try either of these on the stain, test the mixtures on a small part of your carpet to make sure it will not cause discolouring.
Water, dishwashing detergent, hydrogen peroxide, and a steam iron.
The first step of this mustard stain removal is to gently blot the stain with a clean cloth, to get as much of the condiment off without spreading it further. Next you will want to mix 1 part dishwashing detergent with 2 parts warm water in a bowl, then blot the stain with this mixture.
Get another bowl out and mix 3 parts dishwashing detergent with 1 part hydrogen peroxide, which will create a paste. Spread this paste fully on the stain with a spatula or similar object. Then, turn on your steam iron and, at its lowest setting, place it above the stain for 30 seconds, without actually letting it touch the carpet. This will loosen up the stain. Use a cloth with cold water on it to lift off any remaining mustard, and pat the area dry with another dry cloth.
Club soda, dishwashing detergent, and water.
For this method, first blot the stain gently to get as much of the mustard off as possible. Then, pour club soda directly onto the stain. Blot it with a clean towel. If any mustard still remains on the carpet, next create a mixture of 1 teaspoon of detergent and 2 cups of warm water and put it into a spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto the stain and let it sit on the carpet for 5 minutes. Use a cloth with cold water to rinse of the mixture and pat it dry with a clean cloth.
We hope one of these mixtures works for you. Sometimes a stain will be stubborn though, whether it is old or just wants to stick to your carpet.
